Healthy Kids is a comprehensive health insurance program for children. Call toll free-1-877-464-2447 or visit their web site at www.nhhealthykids.com for information and application.  It is definitely worth calling to see if you are eligible, because there are many different plans available.

 

Community Health Services

Provides access to medical, prescription and mental health services for income eligible adults who are unable to afford health insurance. Call to see if you meet income guidelines. Over 100 physicians participate - minimum $10. Co-pay. Children may have Healthy Kids while their parents are members of this program.

Adult drop-in center. 18 AA meetings weekly. Also hosts Al-Anon and Al-aTeen meetings and provides information on additional local meetings.

 

Adult Learners Program

Contact Kathy Mercer 432-1907 GED classes meet Monday and Wednesday from 9-12pm. Starts Sept. 18th.

English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-12 pm.  Starts September 19th.            Program also provides individual tutoring.  Registration required for these free programs. Volunteers always welcome!

 

Bereavement

Offers a weekly video seminar/support group on  Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm. Also offers Divorce Care meetings.  Grief Support Groups, Home Health and Hospice Care offers Spring and Fall sessions for children and adults at no charge. Crisis Service

 

Y.W.C.A.

Provides range of services including hospital and court advocacy and support groups for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Derry 432-2687 or call 24 hour hotline 668-2299. Emergency 911 cell phones available at no cost.  There will be a drop-in Domestic Violence Support Group held for parents on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Call for location.

 

Mentors Big Brothers/ Big Sisters

Parenting Parent Information Center

Information, referral and advocacy for parents with children  receiving special education services.  Also provides information and referral to parents who have questions or concerns about their child’s development. Focus may also be on parenting or school concerns.  Respite Program.  New program offering short term overnight child placement for families in crisis. Care provided in licensed foster homes. This is a partnership with the Upper Room’s Derry Family Outreach, Family Strength and D.C.Y.F.  Call the Upper Room 437-8477 for information.  We would also like to hear from you if you are interested in becoming a respite provider.

PARENT TEST-SUPPORT STRATEGIES

 


Preparing for Testing

  • Note test dates on your home calendar; schedule appointments on non-testing days.

  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for homework and class study.

  • Help you child learn how to find information independently.

  • Praise your child for work done well.

  • Encourage your child to ask questions at home and in class.

  • Get to know your child's teachers.

  • Attend parent-teacher conferences.

  • Confer with teachers on a regular basis for progress reports.

  • Gather available test preparation materials.

  • Assure your child knows that you value a good education.

 


Testing Day

  • See that your child is rested and eats breakfast.

  • See that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed.

  • Encourage your child to do the best work possible.

  • Do not send your child to school if illness is apparent.

  • Do not remove your child from school on test days for appointments.


 

After Testing

  • Examine all test reports sent home.

  • Determine areas of strengths and weaknesses.

  • Praise your child's testing strengths and make a plan to address identified weaknesses.

  • See your child's principal, counselor or teacher if additional information is required.
