Fourth Grade Class Expectations

Planners

The planner, provided by Chester Academy, is an excellent tool for communication between school and home.  Feel free to write your child’s teacher a note at any time. Please note that the last portion of the school day is spent filling out planners.  Assignments are written on the board for students to copy.  The planner will also give you important information on upcoming projects and their due dates as well as advance notice on tests.  This will allow you time to help your child prepare properly.  Students are also reminded each day, when they have filled out their planners, of what materials need to be brought home to complete their assignments.

Homework

Students in fourth grade may expect to have homework Monday through Thursday.  Fourth graders should be spending an average of approximately 40 minutes per night on homework.  Although assignments are not graded, doing or not doing them will affect their grades.  Homework helps to review skills presented in class as well as instill a sense of responsibility.  Please feel free to check your child’s planner and review assignments with him/her, but please let your child do the work and find his/her own errors.  Their mistakes are important to us and will help show what areas a child may not have understood in class or areas where they may need some extra help.

Student Responsibility

Responsibility is the key word for the fourth grade year.  Teachers will encourage, model, and reinforce strategies and techniques that will help students to independently take responsibility.  Expectations will include filling out planners, gathering materials, completing assignments, and bringing them to school the next day.  Listening to and following directions both in the classroom and throughout the building and playground are also important skills which we will continue to stress as we help prepare them for middle school.  Adequately preparing for class, participating in classroom activities, working to their best ability will help promote individual success.
