Vesuvius Scavenger Hunt

You will be traveling into dangerous territory as you explore Mount Vesuvius! Be careful and stay alert!!

During your travels, you will become an archeologist as you dig through the rubble looking for the following facts:

1.      What was the date Mt. Vesuvius erupted and covered the city of Pompeii?

2.      What other Italian city was covered during that eruption?

3.      What kind of volcano is Mount Vesuvius?

4.      Was Pompeii covered with lava?

5.      Can you find and describe the kind of materials that escaped from Vesuvius during the eruption?

6.      How far under these materials was Pompeii buried? Herculaneum?

7.      What year was Pompeii rediscovered?

8.      Describe what the excavators found during the excavation.

9.      The population around Mount Vesuvius continues to be very dense. Why do you think people choose to live that close to a volcano? Would you choose to live there? Why or why not?

10.  Pliny the younger witnessed the violent and deadly eruption of Vesuvius. He wrote letters describing the destruction he witnessed. Now that you have studied Pompeii and Vesuvius, you need to write a letter about that fateful day as if you were standing next to Pliny during the eruption. Describe in detail what you witnessed. Follow the rubric you have been given to make sure you have included everything necessary for a detailed account of what happened.
