Benchmarks for Library/Media Center Literacy

Grades 1-3

Students will:

§         Identify parts of a book( spine, spine label, cover, title page, dedication)

§         Understand media center procedures

§         Understand differences in fiction and non-fiction materials

§         Understand how books are organized on shelves

§         Use online catalog to find library materials (with some assistance)

§         Identify the contents, index, glossary, publisher, and place of publication and copyright of book.

§         Begin to understand the Dewey Decimal system

§         Begin to use computers as research tool (with assistance)

§         Locate periodicals and understand checkout system for same

§         Begin to understand media center reference materials such as dictionaries, thesaurus, and encyclopedias

 
Grades 4-8

 Students will

§         Have basic understanding of Dewey Decimal System and use it to locate materials in the media center

§         Use online catalog efficiently to locate media center materials.

§         Have an understanding of library reference materials: almanacs, atlases, biographical dictionaries, various subject dictionaries, encyclopedias, topical references, and computer search engines

§         Know which source to use for information needed.

§         Understand how to cite sources using accepted formats for print and non-print references

§         Understand copyright rules and plagiarism

§         Use media center as a place to study, do research, use computers, find recreational reading materials, and have small group meetings
