We are looking forward to an exciting year using technology at Chester Academy.  The computer lab now has dual Windows and Linux operating systems.  Students will be learning about Open Source Open Office software programs in addition to Microsoft Office.

Seventh graders are creating electronic books for the younger students (grades 1-4).  Eighth graders will begin the quarter by designing a dream bedroom.  Click here to see how they will learn to work with a budget to furnish and decorate a bedroom!

We have expanded our subscription to www.brainpop.com to include BrainPop Jr. and BrainPop en Español.  Our subscription is only for the school day, but you can check it out on a trial basis.  Go to www.brainpop.com, www.brainpopjr.com, or http://es.brainpop.com/ for more information.

Virtual Field Trips

Did you spend the summer traveling to many different places?  Several Chester Academy teachers traveled to places all over the world and even traveled back in time!  This feat was accomplished by traveling virtually with the aid of technology!  Mrs. Bernard, Mrs. Freiburger, Mrs. D. Fowler, Mrs. Hilliard, and Mrs. Hoellrich took part in an OPEN NH course, Designing a Virtual Field Trip for the Elementary Classroom, that was taught by Mrs. Kessler.  The six week online course explored uses of a virtual field trip and ways to create a trip to enhance the curriculum.  The Chester Academy teachers along with 7 other NH teachers created fantastic trips that will allow their students to travel to places otherwise unavailable.  (Mrs. MacMillan, who was the technology specialist at Chester Academy and is now the technology integration specialist at McKelvie School in Bedford, also created a virtual field trip.)

A Portaportal account has been created for the Chester Academy community.  Portaportal is a web-based bookmarking utility.  This allows the staff at Chester Academy to bookmark websites for their students.  The students can access the Portaportal account from any computer with Internet access.  The username for our account is chesteracademy (all lowercase letters and no spaces between the words).  Click here to visit Chester Academy’s Portaportal account to view the different resources.

Digital Portfolios – All students are required by the State of New Hampshire to keep a cumulative (K-8 and 9-12) digital portfolio which demonstrates the integrated use of technology in all content areas.  The portfolios will be evaluated before the students go to Pinkerton Academy.  If the students meet the requirements they will be able to take a higher level technology course at Pinkerton.  They will not receive a half credit from Pinkerton for their work at Chester Academy.  Students in middle school have saved their files on their personal drives.  They will be reviewing the work and deciding which files/artifacts should be part of their digital portfolio.  The students will create an index page with hyperlinks to the files.  The index page will include a reflection of each activity and the types of technology used.  Students in the elementary school save their work to a personal folder which is stored in a class folder on the public drive.  Each student’s folder has been moved from the previous class folder to the current class folder.  Students will begin creating index pages in 3rd or 4th grade.   For more information on the state standards, please click on the following URL.  http://nheon.org/oet/standards/ICTquickref.pdf

This year the Technology Department installed Google Earth onto all the lab computers.  Google Earth has maps and satellite images that you can search for by the location.  Students have enjoyed exploring their neighborhood, the state and the globe.  Seventh graders in the technology class recently completed a “where in the world” activity.  Based on coordinates that they type into the search field they were able to “travel” from Chester Academy to Pearl Harbor, the Alamo, Mt. McKinley, Red Square and the Forbidden City.  Other classes have looked at landforms including mountains, forests and oceans.

Google Earth is an incredible tool that can be used across the curriculum from exploring geographic and historic sites to literary settings, scientific landforms or calculating distances between locations.

One exciting feature of Google Earth is the ability to see photographs of specific locations posted by users from around the globe.  Since much of the Google Earth exploration begins from “Chester Academy” we will be posting exterior photographs of Chester Academy onto the website.  These photographs will be available to anyone using Google Earth who chooses to select the link associated with the pictures.  Watch for pictures of the school, athletic field, playground and butterfly garden coming soon!  Cick here to learn more about Google Earth.

Click here to learn about netTrekker, the search engine created by educators for students, parents, educators and librarians.  Chester Academy has purchased a subscription to netTrekker for all students. The search engine is available to the students (and their families) at home as well as in school.  For more information please email Mrs. Kessler.
