Alignment:

Accurately solves problems involving multiple operations on whole numbers.

Uses properties or attribute of angles (right, acute, obtuse) or sides to identify, describe, classify or distinguish among different types of triangles or quadrilaterals.

Demonstrates conceptual understanding of perimeter and area.

Measures and uses units of measures appropriately and consistently.

Focus

and /or

Essential Questions:

What is principal and interest? How can we find out what a large purchase will cost once the interest is added to the principal over five years? Why is an interest rate important?

What is the area and perimeter of geometric shapes, including circles? What does Pi mean? Why is the measurement of angles and sides important in building shapes to scale?

How do we choose strategies to solve multi-step problems?

Skills:

How to compute principal and interest payments over a five year period.

How to measure angles, sides, perimeter and area of geometric shapes.

How to solve real-life problems using formulae for perimeter and area.

How to accurately build an object to scale.

How to use strategies to solve multi-step problems.

Content:

Students will study a unit entitled Buying Your Dream Car! Using the web for research they will choose a car, calculate the cost of the principal they will need, find an interest rate, and make payments and calculations of costs over a five year period. Students will learn how to measure angles, sides, are and perimeter of shapes and to calculate their areas using correct mathematical formulae. They will then use an excerpt from Gullivers Travels by Jonathan Swift to discover a size scale between two worlds. Student will build an everyday object accurately using this scale.

Students will also take part in the Math League Contest in the spring, which is a timed multi-step problem solving test.

Assessment:

Formal assessment of the two major units of study will be done. In each case a rubric will be used to assess work. Students will be given a copy of this rubric at the beginning of each unit.

The Math League Contest will be formally assessed – rules and questions are provided by the contest organizers and students will receive a score for their work.

Remediation:

Individual help will be available as needed.

Students will be encouraged to explore mathematical concepts and to discover multiple ways of solving problems.
