Essential Questions:

What are algebraic representations and fractional representations?

What are fractions and how do we add, subtract and trade them?

What is a polygon, a quadrilateral, a triangle and an angle, and what are the definitions of each?

What are an equation and a variable? How can we use variables to create equations?

What is coordinate graphing? How can we plot points on a graph?

What kind of math do you need to read a menu, order, create a bill, add tax, and make change?

Skills:

Students will learn what ˝, 1/3, and 1/6 is, and how to add, subtract and trade these fractional pieces.

How to create geometric shapes, define their properties and explain their type.

How to work with an x, y graph and plot points.

How to write an algebraic equation using variables.

How to work with a budget and solve problems using money.

Content:

Students will work on a unit called Action Fractions which will introduce the fractions of ˝, 1/3, and 1/6 using pattern blocks. Once students are familiar with trading, adding and subtracting they will play a game using fraction dice and pattern blocks.

Students will investigate polygons, quadrilaterals, triangles and angles. They will learn how to use protractors and geoboards to find scalene, equilateral and isosceles triangles, as well as right triangles.

Students will learn to plot points on a graph using x and y horizontal and vertical lines.

Students will learn how to replace numbers in number sentences with symbols, or variables. They will create their own problems using addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Students will use menus to order food within a budget, add the cost of several items and meals, create a bill using tax tables, compute totals and make change.

Assessment:

Informal assessment of students as they play Action Fractions. Individual assessment as students work at the chart. Formal assessment of written work.

Formal assessment of recorded information and drawings of geometric shapes and the different representations discovered.

Recorded written information of graphs will be assessed.

Individual students will record algebraic sentences at chart and they will be assessed on equations they create for their peers to solve.

Students will prepare written bills and solve written problems relating to budgets in a restaurant.

Modifications:

Enrichment:

Remediation:

Individual help is a constant where needed.

Students will be asked to “think outside the box” in all activities where that is appropriate.  Most of the skills are “discovered” with hands-on activities.
