CURRICULUM
The goal of a Gifted and
Talented program is to respond to the individual needs and interests of
students whenever possible. Therefore, while the curriculum outlines are good examples
of the type of program that is taught, individual units of study may change
from year to year in order to offer the optimum challenge to students.
MATH:
Students will be engaged in problem solving,
student-directed explorations of geometry, algebra, computation and economics.
Units of study will often result in a creative product with real-life learning
applications.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Students will read, write and work on
thematic units that involve individual creativity and critical thinking. Several
units will use art as a basis for exploring literacy.
EXAMPLES:
A fifth
grade math class created everyday objects using a 1:12 scale after hearing Gulliver’s
Travels by Jonathan Swift. This
unit required accurate measurement of area and perimeter of shapes, and a
written narrative of mathematical steps.
A fourth
grade language arts class read Matilda by Roald Dahl. Each student chose a final project that showed their
understanding of character(s), setting, problem and solution, and an insight
into children with extraordinary abilities and the use of humor in
literature.
