Parents of Athletes

Student’s parents are expected to provide transportation as necessary for after school activities. Anyone interested in participating in an interscholastic sports activity (Grades 5 – 8) must have had a physical within the past two years.

Important Notice to all Parents who have a child participating in a sport at school.

Remember ~ If bad weather is in the forecast a Scheduled game or practice can be canceled. Keep your ears tuned to the media for weather reports and call the school if you are unsure. Have a plan in place for such occasions. This is New England, and we all know how fickle the weather can be. This is the price you pay for raising a future sports star.

Chester Academy Athletic Policies (Click for printable version)

The goal of the athletic program is to establish self-discipline, to learn socialization skills, to respect fair play through interaction with team members, coaches and officials, and to better develop physical skills.

Student athletes must maintain acceptable academic requirements and display proper citizenship and sportsmanship skills.

Since it is a privilege to represent Chester in athletic competition, it follows logically that the school has the responsibility to revoke that privilege when the student athlete does not conduct herself / himself in an acceptable manner.  Proper conduct is required of the student not only on the athletic field, but also in the school, community and during transport to and from games.

Students must complete the season (including tournaments and competitions) to be eligible for team or individual awards. An athlete unable to participate because of injury is still part of the team and eligible for all awards. Awards could include items such as trophies, jackets, and having their name on championship banners.

Students must not fail two subjects during a marking term. Student-athletes who fail two subjects during a marking term will be removed from the athletic team that they were participating on, and are ineligible for any team until they meet requirements for reinstatement. If a student fails two subjects they can be reinstated to the team and become eligible for the athletic program again after midterm reports show all satisfactory (C) or above grades.

Student-athletes are responsible for replacement costs of all equipment and uniforms issued to them. This includes shin-guards, team uniforms and warm-ups.

An athlete can not participate in school sports or practice unless they are present in school on that day. If an event is scheduled for Saturday, the athlete must be present the Friday before the game. If a violation becomes known at a later date, it will be enforced at the next practice or game following the disclosure with possible additional penalties. Athletes who are absent from school, or who are tardy after 11:30am for any reason, are ineligible to participate in any athletic activity that day. Special requests, from parents regarding dismissals from school or late arrivals must be requested in advance from the Athletic Director.

·       If absent from school - may not attend, dress for or participate in the event.

·       If absent on Friday, before a Saturday event – may not dress for or participate in the event, but may attend and sit with the team.

·       If tardy after the 11:30am cutoff – may not dress for or participate, but may attend the event and sit with the team.

Any athlete, who is disqualified from a game for exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct, shall not participate in, dress for or attend, the next scheduled athletic event, including tournaments.

Early Dismissal

Athletes will be dismissed from school early for most away contests that begin at 3:30pm. This allows the athletes to change into their uniforms, to be transported to the site of the match, as well as proper warm up time. Dismissal time may vary occasionally depending on what town the team is traveling to and the availability of bus transportation.  Parental permission is needed to be dismissed early. All student athletes will be responsible for the work that they miss. Please sign below if you wish to grant this permission.

Health Attitudes

Student athletes are expected to lead a healthy life style.  Any student who has been determined by administration to be using tobacco, alcohol or drugs will be immediately removed from his/her team for a designated period of time determined by the Athletic Director.

Insurance

Students must be covered by health insurance in order to participate on an athletic team.  A written statement, including the insurance carrier and policy number, must be supplied to the school prior to participation.

Physical Examination

No student will be allowed to participate or try-out for an athletic team unless there is a physician’s statement certifying that the student has passed a physical examination that authorizes their participation.  Students are required to pass a physical every two years unless the physician only authorizes the physical for one year.

 Post Athletic Regulations

In an effort to minimize post-athletic liability, the following regulations are to be adhered to:

1. Team members are to ride the bus to and from all athletic events. It should be noted, however, that a student with a signed parental note given to the coach on the day of the game may be transported according to their parent’s instructions.

2. Team members are to be picked up on time following the conclusion of an athletic event or practice. Parents not picking up a student in a timely fashion may receive a warning from the coach that any additional tardiness’ may result in a student being suspended from the next game or being removed from the team.

Parents should be aware, however, that extenuating circumstances will be given every reasonable consideration.

Athletic Code of Ethics

Code of Ethics – Participants

The role of the player in sportsmanship is very important to our school.

It is the responsibility of each player:

·       To accept and understand the importance of maintaining a positive image both on and off the field of play.

·       To be aware of the responsibilities and privilege of representing the school and community.

·       To cooperate with the coaches and always exercise good sportsmanship.

·       To respect the official’s judgment and interpretation of the rules. Never argue or make non-verbal gestures, which indicate disagreement. This type of immature activity may incite undesirable behavior in the stands and by teammates.

·       To congratulate opponents in a sincere manner following either victory or defeat.

·       To exercise self-control at all times, accepting all decisions and unusual occurrences, and abiding by them.

·       To maintain high disciplinary standards prior to, during and after a game. This includes no fooling around, sitting together as a team (in one area), under strict supervision by the coach. Student athletes are representatives of the community; therefore, proper conduct is required at all times.

Code of Ethics – Spectators

All parents and fans are expected to show respect and good sportsmanship at all athletic events to reflect the ideals that the school is trying to teach.
